6.    The crosshead of my LR Series test machine has reached the top magnetic stop and the yellow safe line button will not go out. What should I do?

The safe line circuit consists of switches in series with a relay coil so the relay can only be energised if ALL the switches are closed. When the crosshead is in line with a magnetic stop, the magnetic reed switch on the crosshead will open and activate the yellow light. The easiest way to close the switch is to place a thin steel strip (e.g. an engineer's steel rule) between the magnetic stop and the reed switch block on the crosshead. This will break the magnetic field so that the yellow light will go out when the safe line button is pressed. Please ensure that the crosshead is driven down to prevent damage to the machine.

 7.    Why does my NEXYGEN™ MT test stop when the load reaches 100N?

When NEXYGEN™ MT software is installed, the maximum load is automatically set to 100N. The load should be set to the maximum load limit of either the testing machine or the loadcell before testing. Connect the NEXYGEN console to the machine, right click on the console, select MACHINE SETUP SCHEMES then set the load limit to the required value. Click on OK then save the setup with the original name of DEFAULT.

Please note that where a lower safety limit is required for some tests, select MACHINE SETUP SCHEMES then set the required load value, e.g. 1000N for use with a set of TG10 grips. Click on OK then save the setup with a new name of (say) TG10. In this case, you will now have two setup's which can be selected as and when required.

When a test is performed in a NEXYGEN batch, the setup scheme is stored and a warning will be displayed if a different setup scheme is selected when the next test is performed.

8.    How can I perform a batch of 5 tests and easily print out a batch report?

A utility called 'Batch Testing.EXE' (Part Number 40/0711) allows NEXYGEN™ MT software to be used in a batch testing mode where the number of samples and required reports can be specified for ease of use.

Please note that this utility will only operate with NEXYGEN V3.0 with graph V3.1 Issue 8 or later.

9.    Why does my computer give communication errors second after starting the NEXYGEN software console? (Does not apply to all computer operating systems eg NT)

The NEXYGEN console requires the COM port buffers to be set to the minimum value for LR and LRX Series test machines and to the maximum for EZ and Plus Series machines. This is done as follows:

  • Click on the Start Menu then select Settings.
  • Select Control Panel then double click on System
  • Select Device Manager then double click on Ports (COM & LPT).
  • Select Communications Port (COM1 or COM2 etc. as required).
  • Click on Properties, select Port Settings then click on Advanced.
  • Click the use FIFO Buffers to enable the function.
  • Slide both the receive Buffers to enable the function.
  • Click the OK buttons on all the screens to return to the desktop.

The hardware found in some computers can experience problems with Communication Timeout errors. For this reason NEXYGENTM MT Software V3 and later version have been designed to overcome these errors.

Other programs that interrogate the software console, such as virus software and power management utilities, can also occasionally cause these errors.

10.   My Plus Series machine displays an error message “Error condition, Safety overload” when driving down or when the machine returns, how can I avoid this?

The default safety limit for the jog speed is set to 50N; this is a safety feature to protect the operator while driving the machine down. If there is a load greater than this on the load cell then the machine will stop with an error message.

Firstly press the zero key to set the load and extension value to zero and now try moving down again. If for example a load was applied when the sample was fitted into the grips and then the zero key pressed this load may show as a compressive load value when the sample has been removed and if this is greater than 50N will cause the error to occur.

If the error still occurs then it is possible to change the safety limit, this may be necessary if for example a heavy grip it attached to the load cell.

The safety limit can be changed to a maximum of 500N if required; we would however recommend that you keep this value much lower to provide protection for the operator of the equipment.

This safety limit is not the same as the load limit that is set when a test is running; it is only operational when the machine is being driven manually or when returning.

Select “Edit” and then the “Global” option from the LCD display to change the safety limit.

11.  Is our material test machine and software still supported?

Lloyd Instruments Limited have a support strategy where we will provide technical and spares support for software and hardware products for a period of 10 years beyond the last production date.

We will also endeavour to continue with support beyond this date, however the unavailability of parts from our suppliers will determine this duration. Software also has an obsolescence based on compatibility with the operating system used.  Products, which currently fall into this category and can no longer be supported include;

T2000, T2001, T5K, T5100, T20,000, T30K and T50K – produced 1981-1988
M5K, M30K, M50K and M100K – produced 1984-1998
